Tehseen and I are the Senior staff and owners of Salon Estilo.  We have been in the industry for over 30 years combined.  Working together I have to say is a dream come true.  We met at Fiorio a huge upscale salon chain , our location had about 35 staff members.  8 Years ago Tehseen left and always told me to call her whenever I wanted to leave so we could ride into the sunset as business partners.  5 Years ago I had enough of not having control of my surroundings and didn’t want to loose the love of the industry. So I called Tehseen and within 3 months we had a company name a location and a plan for a positive salon that we had the control over the atmosphere. We hired Jas first then hired Melinda.  We hired them right when they were done school and have had the privilege in seeing them learn from us and learn from themselves.  They have grown as people and as stylists.  Being a salon owner I knew it took a lot of work and determination but the best part of it is seeing your staff grow in a positive way.  Our team helps each other, don’t get me wrong you can step on each others toes spending long amounts of time with anyone there will be some moments where you could pinch them but I have to say there a few of those and the recovery time from the pinch is very short. All in all our team is willing to grow and learn from each other to continue great success.  We also have a new addition to our team Ashley who helps us out on Saturdays.  She has a background working with Tehseen and I at Fiorio.  We hope her training with us will bring her back to our industry as a stylist.

Our Team and how we interact, how we help each other is important to Tehseen and I.  It creates the flow of the salon and the vibe.  We want the feeling when you walk into our salon as welcoming, fun and free of tension and negative vibes.  We are always learning and striving for better from ourselves and our Team.  In April we will continue our education but not with hair skills but with business skills to bring our clients the best experience we can.  Our whole team will go all the way to Orlando, Florida to spend 3 extensive days in a business camp for salon professionals.  We will never stop striving to give our clients the best of ourselves.  We hope you see that in our service and in our work.

The most asked for colour nowadays is Balayage. Most clients will come asking for BIOLAGE or BLOLAGE.  OK PEOPLE its called BALL- E -AWGE.  Funniest thing is listening to every different version of the word.

The next thing they ask is what the difference is between Balayage and Ombre. Simply Ombre is a look and Balayage is a technique.

Balayage was popular in Paris in the 1970’s and 80’s, its not a new trend its actually a classic.  The technique is a freehand hilight that is mostly used to create dimension, movement and natural affect. Combining it with many other techniques can create Ombre, which is more contrasting.

Creating a hype around new techniques is what the industry does to get people talking and wanting new looks. Ombre started a long line of techniques like foiliage, sombre, ecaille and a lot of others.  In the end the techniques are similar in application , they may vary a little but the looks will just give you more roots less roots vary the tones and contrast. Now done properly by a well trained professional it will be beautiful. Being done by some one who hasn’t been trained can go very very badly.

Balayage is Beautiful can be bright but more often subtle and dimensional. You can give movement to every colour, tone and hair type.  Doing research on who will be doing your Balayage is important you don’t want to walk out looking like you had dip dye done to your ends and having lines everywhere. Try checking out social media for what your stylist has done before so you know what other clients have had.  Bringing pictures of what attracts you and how contrasting you want your colour to be is super helpful.

Going in to the salon expecting miracles is not realistic and puts pressure on your hairstylist not to achieve what you want.  A well trained professional will tell you if it can be achieved.  Our priority in our salon is for our clients to get what they want but not at the sake of ruining their hair to get to that point.  There are things we use to help the integrity of the hair but those products are not a magic wand.  Doing a consultation and showing pictures is a great way to set goals for your hair and helps the stylist visualize what you would like.  Certain Balayage or Ombre looks take time and investment to achieve, so always go in knowing that and you’ll be happy every time.

The investment of these looks can be a lot when you start off but the maintenance of it is so low that its totally worth the time and money. Unless you have grey hair to cover you will only  be getting it done 1-2 a year.

Balayage is Timeless and will continue to be a staple in women’s haircolour for years to come.

Tehseen and I have had our instagram account for 4 Years now, I (Daniela) pretty much am obsessed with it.  What an amazing way to see what is in trend and who is who in hair colour and cut in the celebrity world.  I have been in the industry for 15 years and before you had to follow magazines and see if their stylists were mentioned or you had to look it up online. NOW wow everyone tags everyone.  So there began my obsession. I follow everyone who is a celebrity stylist.  I constantly add whenever I see a celebrity tag their glam team.  We started following the owners of Ramirez Tran salon in Beverly Hills a few years ago and I’ve loved their work.  Their philosophy makes them even more amazing. They have Trade marked “lived in hair” they believe your cut or colour looks the best 2 weeks after so they want you to have that feeling right after you leave, like you’ve lived in it already. Great concept so how do they do it? We had the awesome opportunity to take a class with them.  This was their very first class. Thank goodness they posted something on Instagram and one of our reps knows how I feel about education and let me know they were coming to T.O. OMG I totally jumped at the chance.

Both Tehseen and I are firm believers in educating yourself with different people and different styles totally makes you evolve as a hairstylist. So we took the plunge.

One of the Best classes we’ve  taken. Trust me between the 2 of us we are very well educated.  I have enough certificates to wall paper one of our walls at the salon, not to show off but to say that we would know a good class when we had one.  This was different, they weren’t coached by the colour line, they didn’t have to watch what they said because it wasn’t the theory of colour or cut.  It was raw they were real.  They shared their journey with us that they’ve had in the Industry, they also were so approachable when you wanted to go up to them and ask questions which I did , I received good advice from Johnny who is also a colour tech like me.  He was very humble and very easy to ask questions to. Anh Co was awesome too, Tehseen has already started using his technique and was so impressed that at any age you can be successful. They started at a later age and built their salon over the last 10 years.  He was an educator for Tony and Guy who Tehseen has done classes with so what a great treat to have someone show something new and exciting. Anh Co and Johnny seem to share our vision of a salon as a team and stressed the importance of it.  Our class was like 7 hours long and literally it took like 5.5 hours to do this girls colour with 2-3 assistants on her. The amount of time it takes for those looks clients can’t imagine and the cost.  Most of us achieve those looks in 2-3 sessions he does them in one day, obviously with a hefty bill from what we charge but they were incredible and beautiful and not fried to crap he didn’t even use olaplex my beloved product lol. We were completely inspired and if they ever decide to come back we may have to take the class again !  All around amazing inspiring experience and can’t wait to try something I learned! Who’s  gonna be my test subject??? MUAAAHHHHHHHH.

thAs a woman not a hairstylist you go through times in your life where you just don’t think straight.  You make irrational decisions on something that A) is annoying you B) you have a million things on the go and just do whatever comes to mind.

I had that time in my life 3 years ago.  We had opened the salon my husband and I just had a baby  I literally got married on a Saturday and went into work on the Tuesday and said CUT IT ALLOFF! Yes you guessed it I cut all my beautiful long hair into a BOB!  Now there is nothing wrong with a bob they are beautiful cuts. The irrational decision to do it was my hormones, not sleeping and the stress of running the business broke me down. As a hairstylist I should have known my hair had changed from the pregnancy.  It was frizzy unruly being long, so short what the hell was I thinking! It was a fro and I had to work to style it and the point of cutting it was to make it easier. That’s where I was thinking out of my ass.  There began my journey.

Most women who want to grow there hair think “I better not cut it for 3 years to get it where I want it to be.” Then there are others who still listen to the crock that if you cut it it grows faster.  How do you think that makes sense? Your hair grows out of your head not from the bottom up.  So I decided I would keep trimming it to keep it strong on the ends which is the real reason to trim it to grow it. Split ends split and make your hair weak and you end up with really stringy ends that don’t get any longer.

At this point my journey took a detour when I really got sick of the colour. Oh boy did I just change my mind again?  So on top of the awkward stage growing out I decided I was bored with the colour can’t change the cut so lets spice me up. Slowly I started going lighter. Then I had a not so great experience on my blonde and a flat iron.  Yes hot tools can hinder your hair growth. Not because it grows slower (haha) it actually melts your hair with over use or if your hair is sensitive hence my blonde pieces felt like crap.  In the past you would have had to cut that right off there is no helping that.  Now we have Olaplex. THANK GOD FOR OLAPLEX! I kept that up and continued with my moisturizing treatments and my hair was feeling like a million bucks.  So this is what I learned  through my journey and through the journey of hundreds of women who I have tried to guide to grow their hair…..

  1. Cutting it keeps the ends strong and the shape in tact
  2. Regular Olaplex treatments keeps the hair strong to be able to spice up your colour up when you get bored while you are patient with the growth process
  3. Heat can melt your hair so protect it either with products or turn the heat down.
  4. It takes at least 2 years to grow out a BOB to have long hair , yes 2 years! Patients is key
  5. Taking hair vitamins can make your hair fuller and stronger which in turn help the growth
  6. Using the proper hair products that your stylist or colourist recommend insures the process will continue at home.
  7. Putting the time at home with a routine to take care of your hair will pay off

Follow these steps and I promise you your hair will be in the best condition of your life.

“if you care for it, it will grow”

imagesMost of our clients live here in Georgetown and know the struggles of hard water. Most homes have water softeners or treatment systems to help with this issue. What most people don’t realize is those systems can only do so much depending how hard the water is. If your hair is always dry or brittle, hair colour doesn’t stay or even changes colour (green, ashey, orange, yellow ) It could be due to a build up of multiple minerals like iron, copper, calcium and magnesium to name a few. Chlorine is what they use to disinfect the water it can also take a toll on your hair. So what should you do? what can we do to get rid of this build up? There are products out there now that can target these issues. Malibu C is the one we found to be the most affective. It’s a Vegan line that has a great website that goes in depth about all these water issues. We carry the shampoo and conditioner for home care and do hard water or swimmers build up treatments in salon. WOW have we found a huge difference in shine, body and colour for our clients. It’s so important to keep that build up to a minimum to keep you hair healthy and strong. For more info on hard water check out Malibu C

OLAPLEX is one of the hottest new things in the hair industry. It has really changed the way we can colour hair and brought the industry to a whole other level.

Let’s see how it works…….

We all have bonds that are in our hair structure. Every time we colour, highlight, blow dry or pretty much expose our hair to anything those bonds break. Olaplex reconnects them together to make the hair stronger. It is free of silicone, sulfates, phthalates, DEA , aldehydes , gluten and they haven’t tested on animals. It is a 3-step process. Step 1 using NO. 1 in your colour and lightener or you can even do a water treatment. Step 2 is done at the sink using NO.2 leaving it on for a minimum of 5 minutes. The last step is to use NO.3 at home to continue the re-bonding process. The hair will be stronger but never forget that your hair needs moisture and protein to have a balanced hair diet.  This is a very exciting product for the hair industry.  Pushing the boundaries of the hair farther and safer then ever before.  Never forget that the people who use it have to be very mindful that the boundary can be pushed to far so make sure you see someone who is very experienced in the product and in the colour world.

Keep this product in mind next time you get your hair done it’s a must have!
